During a recent flight, I sat quietly looking out the window and had the following thought:
Since the weather was cloudy and a bit rainy, the pilot decided to go above the clouds for a smoother flight. Then I saw it, we had reached an altitude where the colors seemed inverted. Let me explain. At first, we flew among the white clouds with the blue seas beneath us but at a higher altitude, the clouds fell under us and all around were nothing but hues of blue.
This made me think of birds. When we see the flocks fly by, they are usually in the first perspective, clouds above and ground below. There are, however, a few species that go beyond flying; some birds soar.
To soar is to go above the tempest. Flocks of birds fly, but the several species that soar at higher altitudes do so alone. It is there above the clouds, in that moment of soaring alone, that we can appreciate an entirely different perspective.
Sometimes we are called to soar.
But they who wait upon the Lord will get new strength. They will rise up with wings like eagles… (Isaiah 40:31a NLV)
